Biblical Meditation
In Psalm 77, Asaph reveals how he meditates.
But his practice of meditation was very different from what many people think of when they consider meditation.
First of all, he meditated with his heart, not his mind.
“I will meditate with my heart, and my spirit ponders…”
Also, his meditation did not consist of becoming empty, but becoming full.
Asaph filled his heart with recollections of God’s attributes and memories of God’s work.
Asaph pondered a series of rhetorical questions about God’s character;
Is God good?
Is God loving and kind?
Is God faithful?
Is God gracious?
Is God compassionate?
Asaph reflected on memories of God’s works;
“I shall remember the deeds of the Lord,
Surely I will remember Your wonders of old.
I will meditate on all your work and muse on your deeds.”
The purpose of Biblical meditation is to fill our hearts with affection for God, based on His character and His work.
