How NOT to Pray

The first thing that Jesus taught about prayer was how NOT to pray (Matt. 6.5-7).  He started His teaching on prayer by tearing down false ideas about prayer.

"When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others."

These pharisees prayed in order to get people's attention.

Jesus then said,

"When you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words."

These pagans prayed in order to get God's attention.

If you can remove the false notion that you need to get the attention of God and of other people from your prayer life, you will be able to pray the Lord's Prayer freely and naturally. Jesus was intentional about removing these false notions from the prayer lives of His followers before teaching them a new way to pray.

Jesus taught his disciples to pray as those who don't need the attention of other people, and already have the attention of God.
